Six Degrees of Separation

Six degrees of separation becomes more plausible with every move my family makes. With each new community we assimilate into our friend circles expand and our networks broaden. Being extraverted may give me a bit of an advantage in connectivity. Because in this every moment I’m dying to know the story of the trendy millennial girl with a huge flower tattoo across her belly, flowing skirt, nose ring, and gold hoop earrings sitting in a zoom call at the table next to mine in Monkey Monkey Coffee and Tea on Carrollton Ave.

I just talked with her ever too briefly. She was so nice! Can we be friends, lovely stranger?

Who would I want to experiment six degrees of separation on? Maybe Kelly Clarkson, Tori Kelly, Beth Moore, Candace Cameron Bure, Blake Lively? I’m so tempted to try!

And if I did, naturally, I would turn to social media to do so. Who knows whether or not I would stumble upon the good fortune of shrinking the degrees of separation by just a few clicks. Coincidentally I was two clicks away from Beth Moore. (Thank you darling husband of mine for retweeting my last post and tagging Beth. And thank you Beth for reading my last post, what an honor.)

Only six degrees of separation or less! What a wild and fun thought to consider. That we are just a few people and clicks away from everyone.

Now consider this. The people around you in this very moment, strangers or neighbors, are that much closer to encountering Jesus because of you. You are one degree of separation from those nearest you on the bus, at the park, in the coffee shop, or parading on St. Charles for Mardi Gras. And they are one degree of separation from encountering the compassion of Jesus whom their hearts unknowingly long for. Let Jesus’ love flow out of you and into them. Let it be the overflow of your heart, cascading out of your mouth, and through your hands. Diminish their degrees of separation from the very one who made them and loves them.
